July 30, 2008 - The Internet, which will celebrate its first four decades of life next year, has ushered in a new cultural era. An example of this are electronic media as an expression of a digital revolution that has a decisive influence on the world of knowledge and information compared to traditional models. Information and Communication Technologies are a powerful tool with multiple applications: training activities, interpersonal communication and access to resources and services. In this sense, the 2007 report on ICT in the University prepared by the Conference of Rectors of Spanish Universities (CRUE) considers this tool as a "strategic bet". The University of Alicante is and has been avant-garde in the Spanish field with its determined commitment to create a wide space in New Technologies: its Miguel de Cervantes Virtual Library, created in July 1999 and technically managed by the Digital Workshop, is a model in the applied use of new technologies in the field of Humanities in Spanish and Latin American culture. Cyberspace offers multiple pages on History, especially on commemorations, such as the Bicentennial of the War of Independence (1808-1814). The Miguel de Cervantes Virtual Library dedicates a thematic portal to him that includes a selection of the numerous testimonies that have been written about this historical period, in facsimile and pdf format, from the Central Military Library of the Ministry of Defense. In addition, you can also consult a collection of materials provided by the Valencian Library and an extensive repertoire of bibliographic references, links of interest and news. This page is a representative example of the potential that the Internet offers in the context of the Knowledge and Information Society. Digitization is an extraordinary mechanism to preserve and disseminate materials, especially in History, especially in those supports that have a poor state of conservation. The Digital Workshop is carrying out various actions in this field, with the digitization of documents from various municipal archives in the province of Alicante, which allows them to be consulted, through the web, from anywhere in the world and without time barriers. Similar actions are being carried out by the Ministry of Culture and the Autonomous Community of Murcia through the Pares and Carmesí projects, respectively, as two very significant examples, among many others.
