Chilean sculptor, born on October 29, was the first Chilean artist who stood out in this discipline, exerting a great influence on subsequent generations. Rebeca Matte constantly toured Europe and received a careful artistic training, first in Italy in Roman Gulio Monteverde and the Villa Medici Academy school, and later in France, in the prestigious Academy Julien in Paris.the death of his daughter's , he/she abandoned sculpture and returned to his native country, where he/she donated much of his works to the National Museum and founded a home for orphaned children. Matte had the honour of being the first woman who got a square of Professor at the Academy of fine and whose name served for instituting, since 1992, an award to the most outstanding Chilean sculptor. An award, named after Matte, was created in 1922 by the Chilean Ministry of Education for notable Chilean sculptors.
