The Sierras de Famatina are a mountainous system located in the center-north of the province of La Rioja. There is also a town of the same name (located within the Department of the same name in La Rioja) characterized by agricultural activity and tourism. It is located in an arid climate, with very hot summers and mild winters, very little rainfall and the probability of frost.

In the sierras of Famatina is the Cerro General Belgrano. It coincides with the limits of the Riojan departments of Chilecito, Famatina, Vinchina and General Lamadrid. And in its center and surroundings there are important gold mines.
