How much y How many se refieren a la cantidad. Se utiliza how much cuando el sustantivo no es cuantificable y how many cuando si se puede contar. 
Por ejemplo - Si tu preguntas, cuanta azucar queda? No se puede contar entonces usas how much. 
How much sugar is left ?
Se responde con some, a little, a lot. (hay otras formas pero tal vez son mas complicadas de lo que necesitas)
Entonces: There is some sugar left. o  There is a lot of sugar left.
Pero si preguntas cuantas manzanas hay en la mesa? se pueden contar entonces usas how many?
How many apples are there on the table?
Se responde con: un numero, many, few. (de nuevo, se puede responder de otras formas pero puede ser mas dificil
There are 4 apples on the table. 
There are many apples on the table.
