why is a living thing a system?

Plants incorporate solar energy and matter from the environment (carbon dioxide, oxygen and water) and transform it into nutrients and usable energy. Animals incorporate energy through food and also transform it into energy that can be used by cells. As part of these transformation processes, energy is released in the form of heat and also metabolic waste. As matter and energy enters and leaves the system, that is, there is an exchange of matter and energy, living beings are selected open systems.
