From Journey to the Center of the Earth and perhaps before, people have wondered what is inside our planet. The truth is that although we have been able to look at space through telescopes and discover what is beyond our planet, what is inside the Earth remains difficult to explore.
A group of scientists now hopes to dig a hole that reaches the Earth's mantle in 2020, using giant ocean drills. Drilling the Earth's deck, which is relatively thin compared to what's next, requires crossing 6 km under the seabed, for which a large ship should park over the deeper parts of the Pacific Ocean. This place is where the crust is thinner, compared to the 60 km of depth that is from land.
