Petra was a very important city in the area. There was an enormous market in the centre of the city and there were two temples. There was also a festival theatre and there were many public bathrooms. The tombs of the most important kings and queens of the Nabataeans were in Petra. At one point, there were 20,000 people living in Petra and travellers set up tents outside the market. But because the city was in the middle of the mountains, it was very crowded and not very comfortable or clean. Petra is a Wonder of the World city because of its unique architecture and also because there was a very efficient system to bring water to the city, which was in the middle of the desert. The Romans invaded the city and after them, the city declined and the people abandoned it.
