Mr. Carker was a gentleman in his mid-thirties and forties, healthy-looking and with two rows of flawless, shiny teeth, the homogeneous appearance and whiteness of which was quite disturbing. It was impossible to stop looking at them, since he always taught them when he spoke; and she was smiling so widely (a very strange smile, however, that extended beyond her mouth), that there was something about her that was reminiscent of a cat's snort.
