This article analyzes the women’s magazine Claudia de México from its first appearance in 1965 up until 1977, when the National Family Planning Program was launched. Claudia presented itself as a magazine for the “modern woman,” with fashion tips, recipes and articles that addressed sexual and reproductive issues such as sexual pleasure, birth control and abortion. Starting in the 1970s, slogans of “women’s liberation” made their appearance and, though they were criticized, they nevertheless marked the beginning of a new era in which demographic policy began to uphold the rights of women to make decisions on reproductive issues and in which “machismo” became something to be eliminated. This article examines this transition, combining an 1528 resúmenes / abstracts in-depth analysis of the magazine’s contents (articles, photographs, advertising) with other sources, such as contemporary films, Second Wave feminist writings, interviews with women who came of age in those years and secondary literature examining the period.
