The Enlightenment and the Old Regime In the 18th century, new  ideas that harshly criticized the society of the time and demanded the introduction of changes to  eliminate injustices. Its authors were known at the time as the "philosophers." These, in the name  of reason, progress and truth, criticized absolutism and the privileges of the nobility and clergy  proclaiming his desire to "illuminate" through reason; therefore, this century is also known as  "Age of Enlightenment". His main ideas were the equality of all men before the law, freedom  of thought and expression, and tolerance. The Englishman Locke was a forerunner of this thought, and  Montesquieu ("The Spirit of Laws"), Rousseau ("The Social Contract") and Voltaire ("Philosophical Letters")  its main theorists.
