John L. Hennessy
John LeRoy Hennessy, founder of MIPS Technologies; He is currently the tenth president of Stanford University. He earned his BS in Electrical Engineering from Villanova University, and his Ph.D. and Ph.D. in computer science at New York State University in Stony Brook.
Hennessy became a member of Stanford University in 1977; And in 1984 during a sabbatical year, he founded MIPS Computer Systems Inc to market the RISC processors he had been investigating. In 1987 he obtained the position "Willard and Inez Kerr Bell" of professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.
Hennessy was the director of Stanford's computer systems lab between 1989 and 1993, a research center in the departments of electrical engineering and computer science. Between 1994 and 1996 he was president of the Department of Computer Science and from 1996 to 1999 he was dean of the engineering school.
Hennessy and David A. Patterson have written two well-known books on computer architecture that have been widely used as textbooks in the study of this subject:
Organization and Design of Computers: the Hardware / Software Interface (3 editions, the last one is ISBN 1558606041)Computer Architecture: A Quantitative Approach (4 editions: latest ISBN 0123704901).In 1999, Stanford President Gerhard Casper named a Hennessy as a successor to Condoleezza Rice at Stanford University's provost site.
When Casper resigned to focus on teaching in 2000, the Stanford council named Hennessy to succeed Casper as president. As president of Stanford, Hennssy has an annual salary of USD 566,581 and remains on the board of MIPS where he receives another economic compensation.
In addition to the board member of Google, by buying 65,000 shares of the company in the first public offering, shares currently exceed $ 7 million.
