Various aspects of cohesion and coherence have been studied extensively from a variety of perspectives. We use the term coherence to refer to representational relationships and cohesion to the textual indications from which coherent representations should be constructed. This article presents a cohesion and coherence model based on the existing literature of theoretical linguistics and psycholinguistics. The model classifies cohesion and coherence into local and global, guided by grammar and guided by vocabulary, each with its own semantic specifications (eg, referential, spatial, additive, temporal, and causal). The model is illustrated using examples from a linguistic corpus from a novel. Finally, various applications are discussed, including reading time and eye tracking experiments, computational models of speech comprehension, and computational readability tools. This article reviews some current research on cohesion and coherence in psycholinguistics, computational linguistics, corpus linguistics, and literary studies.

This paper introduces a model of cohesion and coherence that is based on existing theoretical linguistics and psycholinguistic literature. The model classifies cohesion and coherence in local and global, vocabulary-driven and grammar-driven, each with their own semantic strand (e.g. referential, spatial, additive, temporal and causal). The model is illustrated using a corpus linguistic examples from a novel. Finally, several applications are discussed including reading time and eye tracking experiments, computational models of discourse comprehension and computational readability tools. The paper points out some of the ongoing research in cohesion and coherence in psycholinguistics, computational linguistics, corpus linguistics and literary studies.
