How does the use of fertilizer affect the nitrogen cycle?

The nitrogen in the fertilizer is taken up by the plants to help them grow. But if there is too much nitrogen present, which happens when too much fertilizer is used, some of that nitrogen does not return to the atmosphere, and instead contributes to environmental pollution.
