The Lord of the Tremors, Black Christ or Taitacha of the Tremors is an image of Christ crucified was created in Cusco around 1620, a copy of a work ordered to build by King Philip II of Spain, which was destined for the Imperial City but was left on the road, in the province of Mollepata.
Its color is not accidental: the Spanish conquerors had the mission to evangelize the entire population of America, and to make them feel more identified with the image of the crucified Jesus, they created this Christ, dark in color and with indigenous features.
The Black Christ occupied an inconspicuous space in the Cathedral Basilica of Cusco and at that time was known as the Lord of the Good Death. But on March 31, 1650 everything changed for the Taitacha de los Temblores. That day, after a strong earthquake that killed more than 5,000 people, the Cusco faithful took this Christ in procession and, as the story goes, at that moment the aftershocks or tremors stopped. Thus, the Lord of the Tremors was baptized with his new name.
