Elective monarchy is a form of government in which the monarch is elected by vote through some mechanism of variable nature. Unlike democracy, voters and candidates belong to a restricted body, by the position occupied, membership in a state (birth), or some kind of personal or social condition. Samoa, the Sovereign Order of Malta, the Vatican City, the United Arab Emirates, and Malaysia are currently the only elective monarchies in force.
