Abraham Lincoln was the 16th President of the United States of America. Known for his honesty, Lincoln is famous for winning the Civil War and ending slavery.

Lincoln was born on February 12th, 1.809 in Hardin County, Kentucky. His family did not have a lot of money, so he had to work on his father’s farm. As a result, he did not have time for school. However, he believed in the value of learning and he read as much as he could when he was not working on the farm.

This love of learning continued into adulthood. Always trying to better himself, he taught himself law and became a lawyer. He also entered politics and in 1.860, as a member of the newly-formed Republican Party, Lincoln won the election for the presidency of the United States of America.

However, parts of the South decided to break away from the rest of the country and the American Civil War began. Lincoln managed to save the American Union and the war ended four years later. Also, during this time, he passed a law which led to the Thirteenth Amendment. This finally gave slaves their freedom.
Unfortunately, Lincoln did not live to see the country come together. On April 14th, 1.865 just five days after the South had surrendered, John Wilkes Booth shot Lincoln while he was attending the theater and he died from his wounds.
