➤ MUST / MUSTN'T

➜ Usamos 'must' para expresar obligaciones o fuertes recomendaciones. Estrictamente, 'must' se utiliza para expresar obligación desde el punto de vista del hablante. Cando la obligación es impuesta por normas, reglas o autoridades externas, se usa 'have to'.

➜ El modal 'must' se usa en presente simple. En otros tiempos verbales se reemplaza por las correspondientes formas de 'have to'.

Ejemplos:

• En 'future simple' ➙ will have to (+ infinitive)

• En 'past simple' ➙ had to (+ infinitive)

• En 'present perfect' ➙ have/has had to (+ infinitive)

➜ 'Must' siempre va seguido de un infinitivo sin la partícula 'to' (llamado en inglés 'bare infinitive') y tiene la misma forma para todas las personas gramaticales.

Ejemplo:

• I/You/He/She/It must protect the environment.

➺ Yo/Tú/Él/Ella/Eso debo/debes/debe proteger el medio ambiente.

• We/You/They must protect the environment.

➺ Nosotros(as)/Vosotros(as) /Ustedes/Ellos(as) debemos/debéis/deben proteger el medio ambiente.

➜ Las formas negativas 'must not' o 'mustn't' se usan para expresar prohibición (= obligación negativa u obligación de no hacer algo). Se usan exactamente igual que 'must': seguidas de un infinitivo sin 'to' y solo en presente simple.
