They asked how we can live in society and thought it was only possible thanks to a construction we all live in called “social contract”. Society keep the peace by doing a "social contract" they limit some of their freedom to live peacefully, if someone breaks the contract society makes them pay, they made laws to punish all these people. The solution is taking away a person's freedom so they can't do more damage to the society.
