Because the crime was seen by a maid who passed by and saw how Mr. Hyde's house and that he guided them because he knew the place

He began to kick the ground and swing his cane in the air as if in a fit of madness. The old man took a step back, apparently astonished at the attitude of his interlocutor, and at that moment Mr. Hyde lost control and hit him until he fell to the ground.
