A chemical reaction, also called chemical change or chemical phenomenon, is any thermodynamic process in which one or more substances (called reactants or reagents) are transformed, changing their molecular structure and their bonds, into other substances, called products. Reactants can be elements or compounds. An example of a chemical reaction is the formation of iron oxide produced by reacting the oxygen of air with iron naturally, or a magnesium ribbon when placed in a flame is converted to magnesium oxide as an example of induced reaction.
The symbolic representation of each of the reactions is called the chemical equation.
The products obtained from certain types of reagents depend on the conditions under which the chemical reaction occurs. However, after careful study it is found that although the products may vary as conditions change, certain amounts remain constant in any chemical reaction. These constant quantities, the conserved quantities, include the number of each type of atom present, the electric charge and the total mass.
