It looks like a scene out of a movie, but it is real. There is an island located in the south-central part of Mexico City where thousands of ancient dolls reign. Abandoned as an offering, some of their heads are exhibited nailed to stakes, while others remain hanging from the trees. The story goes back to 1950, when the owner of the land, Julián Santana, began to hang dolls as protection against evil spirits.
Santana believed he had been cursed. Some time ago, he had found the body of a young woman who had drowned on the shores of the man's grounds. He began to become the protagonist of paranormal episodes: he heard voices, footsteps and the cry of a woman, so he decided to place dolls on the island to scare away the soul of the girl. His obsession reached such a point that he spent hours looking for dolls in the garbage and in the Cuemanco canals.
Santana passed away in 2001 when he was on the banks of the river, just after telling his nephew that a mermaid wanted to take him away. Now, the place has become a tourist site and the authorities of the region are considering creating a museum to preserve the dolls.

La isla de las muñecas
Parece un escenario sacado de una película, pero es real. Existe una isla ubicada en el centro-sur de Ciudad de México en la que reinan miles de muñecas antiguas. Abandonadas a modo de ofrenda, algunas de sus cabezas se exhiben clavadas en estacas, mientras que otras permanecen colgadas de los árboles. La historia se remonta a 1950, cuando el propietario del terreno, Julián Santana, empezó a colgar muñecas como protección contra los malos espíritus.
Santana creía que había sido ma-ldito. Tiempo atrás, había encontrado el cuerpo de una joven que había fallecido ahogada a orillas de los terrenos del hombre. Empezó a convertirse en protagonista de episodios paranormales: oía voces, pasos y el llanto de una mujer, por lo que decidió colocar muñecas por la isla para ahuyentar el alma de la chica. Su obsesión llegó hasta tal punto que pasaba las horas buscando muñecas en las basura y en los canales de Cuemanco.
Santana falleció en 2001 cuando se encontraba a orillas del río, justo después de comentarle a su sobrino que una sirena quería llevárselo. Ahora, el lugar se ha convertido en un sitio turístico y las autoridades de la región se plantean crear un museo para conservar las muñecas.
