At the beginning of the anime you can see the opening which is quite fluid and very catchy.

After the opening we see Ryuk's world and all the shinigami that live there. Ryuk drops the death note and Light finds it and keeps it after reading the instructions, he thinks it's a joke and silly but Light wants to try it because he's curious, he tries the death note on a criminal, 40 seconds go by and Light sees that the criminal died of a heart attack. When he leaves school he goes to a store to buy a magazine and sees some bikers trying to take off a girl's clothes, Light writes the name of a biker with the cause of death and the biker is killed by a truck.
Five days pass and Ryuk tells his classmates that he lost his death note as an excuse to go to the human world.

Light goes to his room and meets Ryuk, they start talking, he tells him that the Death Note is now Light's and explains that if he gives it to another human it will erase his memories.

He also explains that when he is about to die, Ryuk will write Light's name on his Death Note.
