WORKING IN THE USA
My name is Robert Pitt and I’m an engineer. I’ve worked in many countries around the world. I’ve been in
Germany and in Italy for three years, and I’ve also worked in Egypt. At the moment I’m working in the US, and
I’ve been here for 9 months. The working culture in America is different from Europe. People are very friendly
and quickly called me by my first name. I suppose this is also true in companies in the UK today; but when I
started working in the 1970s, work was quiet formal, like it still is in some parts of Europe. Everybody called me
Mr Pitt in the UK and Germany, not Robert.
Another difference is the clothes people wear. I often have to go to meetings in the company office. In my type of
job in the UK or Europe, most men wear suit; but in America they usually wear informal clothes. For example, my
American boss was wearing jeans and sports yesterday. But this doesn’t mean that Americans are informal. When
you meet somebody for the first time, it’s normal to start talking about business very quickly. Being on time is
also very important here. I think Americans are dynamic and flexible, and they aren’t afraid of making mistakes.
What I don’t really like are the working hours and the holidays. Your boss expects you to do lots of extra hours a
week. And the holidays are much shorter here than in Europe- most Americans only get a few weeks’ holiday a
year.
There are many other differences in everyday life. One difference is that people are quite materialistic. Some
Americans think too much about money, but I suppose that’s the same everywhere in the world.
