7 golden rules for learning English effectively

Learning English doesn’t mean speaking it perfectly. English is the third most spoken language in the world in terms of the number of native speakers (between 300 and 400 million people), and the third most spoken language, behind mandarin and Spanish, if we also take into account those who speak it as a second language, which are 200 million more people.

1. Learn English phrases, not just individual words

Why memorize a sheet full of single words if you’re never going to use them individually? No one speaks with words, but with phrases.

Therefore, whenever you find a new and unknown word, do not write it down individually, enter it in a sentence. In this way, you will not only learn its meaning but also its structure and context.

2. In the estudies grammar

According to hoge, when we speak, we don’t have time to think about grammatical structures, erase and correct mistakes. This is because, although grammar is very important for writing correctly, it is not the fundamental basis for speaking.

3. Learn with the ears, not the eyes

When you speak English, words and phrases are heard, not seen. However, most schools strive to teach by the eyes through textbooks.

For his part, hoge believes that listening is the most important rule if you want to learn languages, not just English. Thanks to the active and frequent listening of audiovisual material you will learn a lot of vocabulary, grammar, formulas and expressions.

4. Learn deeply

Learning deeply basically means repeating things to their heart’s content.

5. Study the same stories in different verb tenses

Every time we repeat something, we internalize it, and on that learning it is easy to make small modifications that allow us to understand the difference between the verb tenses. However, textbooks offer us new stories with which to expand on contents that we have not yet mastered.

6. Use only real material in English

Enough of dull and boring textbooks, use only books and magazines from the real world. Read things that interest you, visit blogs and websites that you like, and follow the series in their original version.

7. Do “listen and answer” exercises, not “listen and repeat”

This rule is very powerful and key to learn English quickly and effectively. In general, English schools encourage students to repeat sentences, but this is not enough to internalize them deeply. We must go one step further and try to respond.

If the exercise consists of a text, a series of easy questions should be developed that invite us to seek and develop simple answers. Even if you don’t know the answer, you’ll be forced to think, make assumptions, or excuse yourself in English. Just like in real life.
