At the end of the second half of the nineteenth century, the Opera House in Paris spoke of nothing but the existence of a strange being of frightening appearance that made his laws prevail in the theater's number five box. The dancers of the opera, the choir, the cleaners, the executives, the ushers, especially Madame Giry, who served the phantom box, all spoke in fear that they had seen him on occasion.
A special night in which the directors of the theater passed on the management to Messrs. Debienne and Poligny, for reasons somewhat obscure, everything was planned for a great party preceded by a wonderful operatic function. The young soprano Christine Daaé would sing Gounod's "Faust" Margarita. It was all a success. The high society of Paris met in the theater to watch it. Among the crowd stood out Philippe, the Count of Chagny and his brother Viscount Chagny, Raoul. Raoul, who belonged to the wealthiest nobility, had recognized in Christine the little girl who had served them in his house when, together with his father, a vagabond violinist who was hired as his music teacher. At the end of the function, she went to visit her dressing room in the hope that she would remember him. As he entered the dressing room he saw the indisposed girl, who, far from remembering, asked him to leave urgently, at the insistence of the young man to be with her, because he had fallen in love.
Raoul was not able to leave her, did not know what to do after that, so he decided to hide in the hall of the dressing room to wait before or after leaving. What would be his disappointment when he realized that Christine began to speak with a voice, so he thought his love had suitor. When he stopped hearing voices and saw that after the time nobody came out of the dressing room, he thought he should enter. He could not believe what he saw, or better yet, what he did not see: there was no one there!
The months went by and little by little Raoul managed to get close to Miss Daaé and talk to her. One night, the night of the Opera Masquerade, by private letter, Christine asked Raoul to be in one of the halls of the theater at an exact time, in order to be able to meet her. Raoul agreed, but he was already tired of spending so intriguing and mysterious moments whenever he wanted to see her. When they met, Christine indicated with signs that they should go to the terrace of the theater, just on the top floor, the farthest from the subsoil. There Christine, anguished, told everything that was happening to her with an angel of music. - It's the ghost, Raoul, he, Erik is kind, loves me, loves me so much that he gives me what I want, even freedom !, I kept repeating to the enamored Viscount. The girl told him that he was a deformed man, a Scandinavian immigrant who was abandoned by his parents, who horrified them to have such a horrifying monster and who had learned to live in the subsoil of the Opera without the shelter of a friendly hand at his side . He confessed that when Raoul first approached the dressing room to remind him that she and her father had worked in his palace, he remembered it, only that he could not recognize it because he knew that the ghost was about to arrive and that it was Very strict with her, for she gave him singing lessons, wonderful classes that had made her progress to an unusual point she could not even imagine.
Christine did not quite know what she wanted. But in a moment of passion he confessed his love to Raoul while without them knowing it Erik was spying them with the broken heart. The two lovers devised a plan so that by the end of the function of the next day they could escape forever from Paris.
The next day at the end of the formidable opera performance of the night, in which Christine sang, the ghost kidnapped the girl before the eyes of the theater. No one could believe what he saw, only Raoul who immediately acceded to the basements of the Opera with a police battalion. Erik had kidnapped Christine forever. Raoul was challenged to death with the ghost, the fight for love could be in favor of Erik when he was crying his misfortunes and looking at Christine said: -You are too in love with Raoul to kill him, heck, you can go easy !.
And so poor Erik's soul wandered forever through the suburbs of the theater, or perhaps died forever ...
