PAST SIMPLE:
1. Regular verbs: V + -ed
2. Irregular verbs: Forms will vary.
PAST PROGRESSIVE:
was/were + -ing verb
(use a simple past verb in the dependient clause.)
Grammar:
PAST SIMPLE:
Affirmative: subject + verb in past + complement
Negative: subject + did not (didn't) + verb in present simple + complement
Interrogative: Did + subject + verb in present simple + complement
PAST PROGRESSIVE:
Affirmative: subject + verb to be in past + main verb + ing + complement
Negative: subject + verb to be in past negative form + main verb + ing + complement
Interrogative: verb to be in past negative form + subject + main verb + ing + complement
Use for:
PAST SIMPLE:
To show a finished past action
PAST PROGRESSIVE:
1. To show that a long past action was interrupted by a short past action.
2. To show two long pas actions ocurring at the same time (less common)
Examples:
PAST SIMPLE:
- My mother went grocery shopping yesterday.
- We played basketball after school las Thursday.
PAST PROGRESSIVE:
- I was studying when my friend called me.
- When the earthquake struck, we were playing soccer
