PREFER

• Usamos 'prefer' para decir lo que preferimos en general.

Patterns:

• I prefer something + to + something else (= prefer noun + to + noun)

• I prefer doing something + to + doing something else

• I prefer to do something + rather than + (do) something else

Examples:

• He prefers rugby to football. (➺ Él prefiere el rugby al fútbol americano.)

• I prefer walking to going by car. (➺ Prefiero ir caminando a ir en coche.)

• I prefer to eat fish rather than (eat) meat. (➺ Prefiero comer carne que (comer) pescado.)

Common error:

• She prefers cats than dogs. ❌

WOULD PREFER (= 'D PREFER)

• Usamos 'would prefer' para decir lo que preferimos en una situación particular (no en general).

Patterns:

• I would prefer to do something + rather than + (do) something else

• I would prefer + you/him/her/them/etc. + to do something + rather than + (do) something else

• I would prefer + it + if + you/he/she/they/etc. + past simple (to talk about present/future situations).

Examples:

• He’d prefer to stay at home rather than drive to the restaurant. (➺ Él preferiría quedarse en casa a conducir hasta el restaurante.)

• Would you prefer me to drive? (➺ ¿Preferirías que yo condujera?)

• I would rather have done something

Examples:
