Nació en el año 1500 y tras la muerte de su padre el emperador Huayna Cápac en 1525, Atahualpa heredó el reino de Quito, en Ecuador, la parte septentrional del Imperio Inca, en perjuicio de su hermanastro Huáscar, el heredero legítimo, al que correspondió el reino de Cuzco, al sureste del actual Perú.
