Todas las oraciones negativas tienen dos posibles: una con la forma apropiada del verbo to be en pasado simple (was/were) y el adverbio negativo not, y otra con la contracción negativa correspondiente (wasn't/weren't).

► PAST SIMPLE – VERB 'TO BE'
El pasado simple del verbo to be (= ser/estar) tiene solo dos formas, que deben escogerse según el sujeto de la oración:
• Sujeto: I, he, she, it ----------------- Verbo: WAS
• Sujeto: you, we, they ------------- Verbo: WERE
➜ Para formar oraciones afirmativas en past simple con el verbo to be hay que escribir el sujeto, luego la forma apropiada del verbo to be y por último, los complementos.
Ejemplos:
• He was Chinese. (= Él era chino.)
• We were in the library. (= Estábamos en la biblioteca.)
➜ Para formar oraciones negativas en past simple con el verbo to be hay que escribir el sujeto, luego la forma apropiada del verbo to be, el adverbio negativo not y por último, los complementos. También se pueden usar las contracciones negativas wasn't (= was + not) y weren't (= were + not).
Ejemplos:
• He was not Chinese. / He wasn't Chinese. (= Él no era chino.)
• We were not in the library. / We weren't in the library. (= No estábamos en la biblioteca.)
➜ Para formar oraciones interrogativas (= preguntas) en past simple con el verbo to be hay que invertir el orden sujeto-verbo, es decir, hay que escribir primero la forma correcta del verbo to be, luego el sujeto y por último, los complementos.
Ejemplos:
• Was he Chinese? (= ¿Él era chino?)
• Were we in the library? (= ¿Estábamos en la biblioteca?)
