The San Andrés fault is a continental transforming fault that runs for about 1,300 km through the state of California, in the United States, and Baja California, in Mexico. It forms the tectonic boundary between the North American plate and the Pacific plate and its relative displacement is horizontal dextral. The San Andreas fault system ends in the Gulf of California. The Baja California peninsula is considered to have been formed by the activity of this fault.
Due to the movement of the Pacific plate, penetrating the Gulf of California and north of the San Andrés fault, in the next 50,000 years the Baja California peninsula will move north, separating from Mexico and becoming an island. The San Andrés fault belongs to the Pacific Ring of Fire, an area of high seismic and volcanic activity due to the subduction zones it encompasses, but the earthquakes in this zone are also the product of numerous transformation faults, San Andrés is one of they.
