The Knight of the Andes Miguel Grau was born in Piura, northern Peru, on July 27, 1834. His parents were Manuel Grau and Maria Luisa Seminary. From a very young age he worked in the merchant navy and in 1853 entered the Navy. Four years later he participated in the rebellion of Manuel Ignacio de Vivanco against the Liberal Constitution of Ramón Castilla. Upon being defeated, Miguel Grau returned to work in the merchant navy.
During the War against Spain participated in the combat of Abtao (7-2-1866) where the Peruvian-Chilean allies were victors. In 1867 he married the young woman from Lima, Dolores Cavero, with whom she had ten children.
In 1868, it received the command of the ship Huáscar with which it stood out defending to the elect president Manuel Pardo in 1872 and defeating the rebel Nicholas of Piérola in 1874. In 1876, was chosen deputy by Paita.
In 1879, when the War against Chile exploded, it became the maximum head of the Peruvian squadron. On May 21, 1879, in the battle of Iquique, his ship Huáscar managed to sink the Chilean ship Esmeralda. Sadly, that same day our armored Independence collided and sank when it persecuted the Covadonga.
Under the command of the Huascar, Miguel Grau managed to keep at bay the powerful Chilean squadron that for five months made vain efforts to sink or capture it. But on October 8, 1879, the Angamos combat took place, where a powerful enemy fleet surrounded the Huascar, who resisted as much as possible. A cannon shot of the Chilean ship Cochrane killed the great "Knight of the Seas".
Miguel Grau Seminary, for his personal virtues and his great services to the Homeland, today is considered "The Peruvian of the Millennium"
