Castles were builds to protect the main places that had a important economic, religious or geographic location for theirs rulers.

Furthermore, when a enemy army enter in their lands and they can't fight them in open field, they usually went to their strongholds since in this places they have a lot of benefits because the enemyes must to spend their sinews and do many difficult things to win the siege such as break the main door, climb the walls, and so on.

Therefore, if you lived in the middle age and you could build a castle, you should do it ;)
