Athenian democracy is the name of the democratic political system developed in the Greek city-state (polis) of Athens, in the 6th century BC. C. from the reforms of Clístenes around 508 a. Until the suppression of the democratic institutions because of the Macedonian hegemony in 322 a. C. The timocratic system established in Athens by the Constitution of Solón in the year 594 a. C. is considered its antecedent.
Athens was one of the first cities to establish democracy (although some anthropological research suggests that democratic behaviors were probably common in some stateless societies long before the heyday of Athens). Other Greek cities also established democracies, but not all followed the Athenian model, and certainly none were as powerful and stable (or well documented) as Athens. It remains a unique and intriguing experiment in direct democracy, where people did not elect representatives to vote on their behalf, but instead developed legislation and exercised executive power personally. However, participation was by no means universal, but economic power hardly influenced those who participated, and the number of people involved was enormous. Furthermore, the opinions of the voters were notably influenced by the political satires performed by comic poets in theaters.

Atenas fue una de las primeras ciudades en establecer la democracia (aunque algunas investigaciones antropológicas sugieren que, probablemente, los comportamientos democráticos fueron habituales en algunas sociedades sin estado mucho antes de la época de esplendor de Atenas). Otras ciudades griegas también establecieron democracias, pero no todas siguieron el modelo ateniense y, desde luego, ninguna fue tan poderosa ni tan estable (o bien documentada) como la de Atenas. Sigue siendo un experimento único e intrigante en la democracia directa, donde la gente no elige a representantes para votar en su nombre, sino que desarrollaban la legislación y ejercían el poder ejecutivo de manera personal.
