Edgar Allan Poe born in the United States in 1809. Orphaned at the age of two, he was adopted by a rich Virginian merchant. In 1826 he studied in England at the University. He came back and enlisted in the Army at West Point(1827-31).
He had a busy career as editor, critic, poet, short story writer and essayist. In 1827 he published “Tamerlane”, his first book of poems. He married Virginia Clemm, his cousin, who died shortly after their marriage. Poe died in 1849. Some of his most famous Works are: “The Raven and other poems”, “The Poetic Principle”, “The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym”, “The Fall of the house of Usher”, “The murderers in the Rue Morgue” and “The Cask of Amontillado”. Some of them have been made into films.
