Climate, soil, topography, and crop conservation and management practices affect soil erosion. The ability to predict these effects is a key to conservation planning. There are several simple and complicated models for predicting erosion at ground, plot, field, and watershed levels. These models vary in their input requirements and in their ability to predict other agricultural processes such as hydrology, nutrients, losses due to leaching or other processes and crop production. This article briefly describes several of these models and in another document the use of Geographic Information Systems is discussed to facilitate their application.
