Mr Otis, un hombre de negocios americano, ha comprado la casa de Lord Canterville. Él y su familia se trasladan allí, donde hay un fantasma, el fantasma de Sir Simon de Canterville quien mató a su mujer (Lady Eleanor de Canterville) en 1575.
La familia Otis intenta ayudarle, pero también le gastan bromas. El fantasma no consigue asustarlos puesto que ellos no creen en fantasmas. Por ejemplo, renueva la mancha de sangre de la biblioteca.

It was the first of Wilde's stories to be published, and was first published in The Court and Society Review, on February 11, 1887. The story is about a young American, Virginia Otis, who moves into a castle in England, Canterville Chase, which is haunted by the ghost of a former owner, Sir Simon de Canterville. Sir Simon had been cursed by a witch to haunt the castle until it was cleansed of blood, and Virginia's family is the first to live in the castle in over two hundred years. Virginia's brothers, twins George and William, think it would be fun to frighten the ghost, but Virginia is able to see past Sir Simon's gruesomeness and recognizes that he is simply lonely.
