What are they?
We consider earthquakes to be tremors or earthquakes that occur with vibratory, rapid and violent movements of the earth's surface, caused by disturbances inside the Earth (collision of tectonic plates). The difference between tremors and earthquakes is given by the intensity of the seismic movement, the latter being the most dangerous as its destructive effect can be fatal.
Why do earthquakes occur and what damage do they cause?
Earthquakes are one of the natural phenomena that are not related to weather conditions; its destructive magnitude may be capable of causing great damage in a short time.
Most of the earthquakes are explained by the occurrence of seismic waves or shock waves, generated by disturbances in the earth's crust.
In very severe earthquakes, most victims are killed or injured by falling debris, while others perish from fires or floods that often accompany earthquakes.
What can we do to reduce the effects of earthquakes?
At present, seismologists (specialists who study earthquakes) have been able to predict the location of seismic areas, but cannot yet predict when a movement will occur. Animals such as horses, cows, dogs and cats can feel small vibrations (imperceptible to humans), and their behavior can indicate an imminent earthquake.
Despite scientific advances to avoid seismic losses, it is recommended to maintain the construction of earthquake-resistant houses in high-risk areas. And this and the following recommendations should be included in our earthquake prevention plan:
Pay close attention to how the houses are built.
