Christopher Columbus was born in Genoa in 1451. His parents were Domenico Colombo and Susanna Fontanarrosa. From a young age he sailed in the Mediterranean Sea. In 1476 he came to Portugal and joined expeditions to the northwest of Africa. In those years he began to dream of a sea route to China across the Atlantic Ocean, believing it was a "narrow sea". In 1492 he enlisted the help of Queen Isabel of Castile. After signing the Capitulation of Santa Fe (April 17, 1492), he began his first trip.
