3.-The improvement of the means of communication was one of the main axes of the development of the Victorian economy. Stagecoaches, large steamships, canals and, above all, railways facilitated the transport of people, goods and raw materials, promoting the rise of commerce and industry. Many of the major engineering advances of this era were due to Isambard Kingdom Brunel.42 Brunel was directly involved in the construction of the Western Railway and the SS Great Western, SS Great Britain, and SS Great Eastern ocean liners.
Another milestone in Victorian engineering was the London sewer system, commissioned from Joseph Bazalgette. Most of the work was done between 1859 and 1865. 318 million bricks were needed, 670,000 cubic meters of cement and 2.7 million cubic meters of earth were excavated. The project consisted of the construction of six 132 km long interceptors that collected the flow of 720 km of collectors fed by the 21,000 km of smaller sewers existing in the streets.43 Later, Bazalgette designed the Thames Embankment, dike in the north bank of the River Thames under which is the main low-level interceptor of the sewage system coming from the west, various drinking water distribution pipes and even parts of some lines of the London Underground. During this same period, London's water supply network expanded and improved. In the eighties of the nineteenth century a gas network for lighting and heating was put into service. The invention of the incandescent gas hose popularized gas lighting well into the 20th century. The first electric lights were installed in Newcastle upon Tyne thanks to the research of Joseph Wilson Swan.
During the Victorian era, science grew into the discipline that it is today. In addition to the increasing professionalism of university science, many Victorian gentlemen devoted their time to the study of natural history. In 1859 Charles Darwin made the theory of evolution public in his book The Origin of Species. Photography was started in 1839 by Louis Daguerre in France and by William Fox Talbot in England. By 1900, portable cameras were available.
