Exo (hangul: 엑소; stylized as EXO) is a Sino-South Korean boy band formed by S.M. Entertainment in 2011, the group used to consist of twelve separate into two sub-groups, EXO-K and EXO-M, performing music in Korean and Mandarin, respectively members.
EXO rose to fame with the release of their first studio album XOXO (2013) which contained the lead single "Growl". XOXO was a critical and commercial success, winning two Disk Daesang in 28th Golden Disk Awards and album of the year in the 15th Mnet Asian Music Awards. Finally viendieron over 1 million copies, EXO Korean artist was the fastest-selling in twelve years.1 Their third EP titled Overdose (2014), made EXO as the male group with more graphics on Billboard 200.2
In May 2014, Kris, filed a lawsuit against S.M. Entertainment to be removed from group.3 Luhan, followed suit in October 2014.4 In April 2015, Tao, suspended its activities with the group and later did the same as the previous two members in August 2015.5 After its outputs, EXO continued being a group with nine members.
In January 2011, producer Lee Soo Man, the founder of S.M. Entertainment, announced plans to launch a new boy band in March or April 2011.6 Temporarily called "M1", the group seemed to be composed of seven members only when a picture of them in a dance studio seeped into internet.7 In May 2011, Lee talked about the group in a business seminar about hallyu at Stanford University. In the presentation, he explained his strategy of separating the group into two subgroups, M1 and M2, and so have them promoting the same music in South Korea and China, singing songs in Korean and in mandarín.8 Lee planned to launch the group in May 2011, but his debut was postponed and no news about the group until October 2011, when Lee spoke briefly about the plan for the concept of the group in an interview with South Korean Chosun Ilbo.9
In December 2011, the group's name was officially declared as EXO, EXO-K with names for Korean subgroup and EXO-M for the Chinese subgroup. The twelve members were presented to the public through twenty different videos teaser, launched from December 2011 to February 2012.10 11 Kai, Luhan, Tao, and Chen, the first four members to be presented, had their debut performance in the Gayo event SBS Daejun on 29 December 2011.12.
