1. In the middle of the 19th century the British Richard F. Burton and John Speke carried out a fascinating adventure in the heart of Africa trying to find the source of the Nile. 2. The Nile River is approximately 4,100 miles long and was historically thought to be the longest river in the world. 3. The word Nile comes from the Greek word Neilos, which means "Valley of the river." The Nile is one of the largest rivers in the world. Its channel runs through seven nations reaching 6,700 km until its mouth in the Mediterranean Sea. The word in Spanish language Nilo comes from the Arabic name 'nīl. This term comes from the Greek Neilos (Νειλος). In the ancient Egyptian language, the river was called Hapy (Ḥˁpī) or Iteru (itrw), which means "river or channel", represented by the hieroglyphs shown in the images. In the Coptic language, the word piaro (Sahidic) or phiaro (Boháirico) means "The river." That is, the Egyptians themselves knew it as the Nile.
