Most hockey fans consider Mario Lemieux one of the sport's all-time greats. But Lemieux's career could have been even greater. During the 1993 season, a lump appeared on his neck. He was diagnosed with a treatable form of Hodgkin's lymphoma. Lemieux endured two months of radiation treatment before returning to the ice. Despite playing only three-quarters of the season, he won the scoring title. Unfortunately, the disease gradually weakened Lemieux's back. He retired in 1997 at the mid-career age of thirty-one. However, strengthened by time away from the game, he returned again in 2000 to play several more seasons.
