1. Cartagena of the indies is a fabulous city. It is fabulous for its history of Spanish
conquerors and frequent invasión of pirates, and for its military and colonial
architecture.
2. Don Pedro de Heredia founded the city on january 20th, 1533. The caribs and the
kalamaris, indian tribes of the caribbean área, were already living there.
3. The Spanish conquerors invaded the carib’s territories. Then they penetrated the
conuntry and invaded the Sinú, Chibcha, Quimbaya and Calima territories.
4. They stored all the gold and precios stones they took from the indians in Cartagena.
5. As a consequence, the port was a great temptation to pirates, corsairs and buccaneers.
They attacked and robbed Cartagena many times. Among them were Admiral Edward
Vernon and Sir Francis Drake. But there were also men who defended the city with
great courage, for example, Sancho Ximeno, a salve, and Admiral Blas de Lezo.
6. Because of attacks, that spaniards decided to protect the city, and they constructed
walls, fortresses and fortified castles.
7. The fortress of San Felipe de Barajas is the most extraordinary example of military
architecture in Latin America. It was built over a period of 40 years by Italian, Spanish
and Dutch engineers.
8. Thousands of blck slave from Africa contributed to the fortification and defense of the
City with their work and lives. In La Plaza de los Coches in Cartagena a terrible human
market existed, a slave market. Fortunately, a jesuit priest, Saint Pedro Claver,
protected and evangelized them. He died in Cartagena in 1654. His remains are
preserved in the altar of the Church of San Pedro Claver.
9. At that time, the inquisition of Cartagena was instituted. In the name of catholic religion,
the Spanish Crown punished every type of offense or subversión. The palace of the
Inquisition is another interesting monument.
10. Cartagena was the first city in Colombia to declare its Independence from Spain. The
