River floods are natural processes that have occurred periodically and that have been the cause of the formation of plains in river valleys, fertile lands, meadows and riverbanks, where agriculture has normally developed.

In the coastal areas, the onslaught of the sea has served to shape the coasts and create swampy areas such as ponds and lagoons that, after their anthropic occupation, have become vulnerable areas.

Local or regional causes Edit

In the Mediterranean area there is the phenomenon of the cold drop, produced by the differential heating between the lands and the waters in late summer and early autumn (generally, during the month of October), when the temperature over the lands begins to be quite cold while the seas are still quite hot. This difference is especially noticeable on the eastern coasts of Spain and in other regions of the Mediterranean.
