The oxygen in the growth medium plays a critical role, as it determines the orientation

root and the metabolic state of the root. Oxytropism allows the roots to avoid areas of the

substrate with low oxygen levels and could also be a physiological mechanism to reduce

competition between roots for water, nutrients and oxygen itself (Porterfield and Musgrave,

1998).
