This happened over twenty years ago. I had been staying (stay) with some friends who had bought (buy) a cottage in southern Italy and I was flying back home to London. We were about twenty minutes into the flight when I realised (realise) something was wrong. We had climbed (climb) to 10,000 meters and the pilot had switched off (switch off) the seat belt sign. We had been flying (fly) smoothly for about five mintues when I saw (see) an old man on the other side of the cabin staring out of the window with an expression of pure terror on his face. Then he raised (raise) his hands in the air and said (say) very loudly, 'My God, we are all going to die!' Two flight attendants, who had been chatting (chat) nearby, came over and looked (look) out of the window. One of them immediately ran (run) to the front of the plane and went (go) into the cockpit, and at the same time, I felt the plane begin to lose height. Then the pilot made an announcement. He said we had lost (lose) one engine and we would have to return to the airport. At the time I thought this meant one engine had stopped (stop) working, but I later learned that the engine had actually fallen off (actually / fall off) the plane and I wondered whether it had hit (hit) anybody on the ground. I never found out (find out) but at least the mishap had not damaged (not / damage) the wing or any other parts of the aircraft and we landed (land)
