A different point of view
Many adults speak of the ‘digital citizens’ nowadays. They say that teenagers don’t read books or talk with family and friends. ‘Adolescents don’t communicate’, so they say.
I don’t agree with that. We communicate in a different way. I love reading, for example, and I usually read one or two e-books per month. So I always carry my tablet with me and chat online with friends no matter where they are. I’ve got friends all over the country and in other countries too. When I met these digital friends, I found out about new interesting places! And I always send messages to my mum to tell her I’m arriving early or late.
It is true that I play video games and this activity is time-consuming but, in the past, I played with my toys in my bedroom for many hours. If I think of my parents, when my mum was a teenager, she didn’t phone her mother because they didn’t have a phone at home. My father sent letters to his friends only once a month. I send emails every day and, sometimes, I even send two or three emails to the same friend on the same day! Now we can also use video conferences to see each other when we chat. That is great because we can actually see the feelings on our friends’ faces.
Do we sometimes get addicted to our smartphones? It can be true. But parents can also ask us to put our devices aside to have a good family chat during meals. Each family set their own rules. So we can be digital citizens and have good communication with our family and friends.
