The history of the Colombian department of the Archipelago of San Andrés and Providencia refers to the events that have taken place in these islands after 1502. Numerous peoples have contributed to the shaping of the Raizal culture of the archipelago: Africans, British, Scots, Dutch , Irish, French, Spanish and Colombians. In particular, three characters have had to do with its history in a very particular way: the pirate Henry Morgan, who made the islands the central command of his piracy activities in the Caribbean Sea; the first Spanish ruler (son of Irish parents), Tomás O'Neille, and the French Luis Aury, who supported independence causes throughout the Caribbean basin from the islands, from Texas to present-day Colombia. History then demonstrates the strategic importance of the islands in the western Caribbean region.
