Juan de Castellanos was born on March 9, 1522 in Alanís, Seville, Spain.
Son Cristóbal Sánchez Castellanos and Catalina Sánchez.
He traveled to America very young in the company of Baltasar de León, son of the great soldier Juan de León.
He was a soldier, a merchant, a pearl fisherman and was ordained a priest in Cartagena.
He settled in Tunja in 1562, where he served as a beneficiary of the church of Santiago de Tunja, which earned him a great fortune.
He set out to write a work of historical literature on the discovery and conquest of the Antilles and the New Kingdom of Granada. The poem consists of four parts with a total of 113,609 verses on the events of Columbus, the discovery and conquest of the Antillean islands; the events of Venezuela and Santa Marta, the history of Cartagena, Popayán, the government of Antioquia, Chocó and the New Kingdom of Granada.
Of the monumental Elegies of Illustrious Men of the Indies, divided into four parts, only the first could be published during the author's lifetime (1589).
