Legend has it that during the 17th century, in the Edo period, the Gotokuji Temple was very poor and had serious financial problems. The monk who inhabited it, who was already an old man, shared what little food he had with his cat, Tama.
One day, a feudal lord, and man of great fortune, whose name was Ii Naokata, was surprised by a storm while hunting. This mighty man took refuge in a tree near the temple and, while waiting for the storm to subside, he saw a white, black and brown cat beckoning him to come closer to the Gotokuji temple gate.
The man was so surprised that he left the shelter to get closer to the cat and see her better, just when a lightning strike fell on the tree that had given him shelter. Grateful for saving his life, the man donated rice fields and farmland to the temple, financed the temple repairs. So thanks to the good deed of the cat, the temple became very prosperous.
